ABOUT US

AWTSL was founded in 2017 to provide shelter for abandoned street dogs and cats, primarily from Galle Face Green in Colombo 3, Sri Lanka. At the time, many of these animals were surviving on scraps left by visitors to the Green and were often in extremely poor condition.

 As the number of street dogs and cats seeking refuge at the shelter steadily increased—eventually exceeding 100—and animals began arriving from other areas of Sri Lanka, Animal Wellness Trust Sri Lanka was formally established in 2019.

The organisation was created with the following objectives:

  • To rescue, rehabilitate, rehome, and provide safe shelter for abandoned street dogs and cats, as well as to offer veterinary care to those who are sick or injured;

  • To support the humane control of dog and cat populations through sterilisation and neutering programmes; and

  • To improve community awareness and understanding of abandoned dogs and cats by highlighting the positive impact of companionship between humans and animals.

Adoption

Adopting from our shelter is one of the most impactful ways to support our mission. Every adoption not only gives a loving home to an animal in need but also creates space for us to rescue and care for another. We are delighted to offer adoption options both locally and internationally, making it possible for our animals to find homes worldwide. Your compassion can change a life—both theirs and yours!

Sponsor a Puppy

Many of our dogs have spent much of their lives in the shelter. While they are safe, happy, and well cared for - with open spaces to run, clean water, nutritious food, and daily attention from our dedicated staff - individual sponsorship adds something truly special to their lives.

A sponsor’s love brings extra comfort and joy, especially to our older dogs, those struggling to find a home, or dogs who have only ever known the shelter as their world. Sponsorship means more than support—it means brighter days, extra care, and the reassurance that someone is thinking of them.

For just US$10 per month, your sponsorship provides extra treats, joint supplements to support ageing bodies, and routine medical care, helping our dogs live healthier, happier lives while they wait for their forever families.

How you can help

Donations help cover essential medical care, nutritious food, and ongoing shelter maintenance, while also supporting our daily feeding rounds for dogs living on the streets. Your generosity allows us to continue rescuing, caring for, and protecting dogs in need every day.

Volunteer

Combine your love for animals with the rich cultural heritage and natural beauty of Sri Lanka! Our volunteering programme invites international volunteers, veterinary students, animal trainers, and animal lovers (minimum age: 18) to make a real difference in the lives of rescued animals while experiencing a meaningful and rewarding adventure.
