About Us
AWTSL was initially started in 2017 to provide a NO-KILL shelter to abandoned street dogs and cats mainly from the Galle Face Green situated in Colombo 3, Sri Lanka. The abandoned dogs and cats were surviving from scraps thrown by visitors to the Green and in very poor condition.
With the ever-increasing number of street dogs and cats finding solace in the shelter from other areas of Sri Lanka and the number reaching over 100, the Animal Wellness Trust Sri Lanka was officially established in 2019 with the objective to:
- Rescue, rehabilitate, re-home and provide shelter to the abandoned street dogs and cats and afford veterinary care to those street dogs and cats who are sick or injured;
- Support the humane population control of dogs and cats through sterilization and neutering and;
- Improve community understanding of abandoned dogs and cats by highlighting the benefits of companionship between humans and animals.
Adoption
Adopting from our shelter is one of the most impactful ways to support our mission. Every adoption not only gives a loving home to an animal in need but also creates space for us to rescue and care for another. We are delighted to offer adoption options both locally and internationally, making it possible for our animals to find homes worldwide. Your compassion can change a life—both theirs and yours!
Sponsor a Puppy
Many of our dogs have been in the shelter for some time now. However, they do enjoy their lives at the shelter, where every dog has a safe environment, open spaces to run, clean water, plenty of food and attention from our staff and volunteers.
US$10 a month will provide extra treats, additional joint supplements for our older residents and routine medical care.
